In this video I talk about the 3 biggest myths about self help books, and why self help books aren't always helpful.

These are based off of my personal experiences reading the self help genre over the past decade. This isn't to say that ALL self help books are bad. But it's a reminder that not every self help book you read is helpful.

Myth #1: The more self help you read, the happier and more successful you'll be.

The fact is, most self help books aren't that good. Most of them say the same things, and authors often use the publication of a self help book more so as a branding plot than as a helpful resource to the reader.

Myth #2: Self help books will make you smarter.

Unfortunately reading more books isn't going to turn us into the next Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk. Yeah, Elon talks about how he read books to learn how to build rockets, but he's also a genius alien. Reading helps to introduce new ideas and concepts, but learning and comprehension takes much more effort than simply reading a book.

Myth # 3: Reading self help is always a good use of time.

Reading, just like anything else, takes an investment of time. And there is an opportunity cost to that time. While reading is helpful, it can also be a form a procrastination when you're reading instead of doing. Don't fall into the trap of reading more than doing.
