The American composer, teacher, band leader and trombonist William (Bill) Russo (1928-2003) is probably better known for his work as a band leader, trombonist and chief composer-arranger for the Stan Kenton Orch. (1950-54). However, he wrote a number of orchestral works which might be characterized as third-stream scores.

His 2nd Symphony was written for Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic and trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. Although never commercially recorded, that premiere performance is available on the New York Philharmonic's website.

This performance is a better recording and features the trumpeter Bud Brisbois and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa from a performance recorded on July 30, 1967.
