Electricity is all around us. It’s easy to take for granted. But it’s important to remember it can hurt or kill, even without touching the electrical conductors or circuit parts! If a worker is too close and not properly protected, they could experience electric shock due to inadvertent contact or electrical arc-over, as well as a potential arc flash/blast situation.

In Article 130.8(O) of the NFPA 70E (2024), it details the use of alerting techniques to warn of and limit access to hazardous areas for unqualified or unprotected workers. To determine where those alerting techniques must be placed (barricades/attendants), the electric shock boundaries and possible arc flash boundaries must be examined (NFPA 70E Articles 130.4(E) & 130.5(E)).
