CREATIVITY – Noller’s EQUATION AND Creatology’s FORMULA
This video provides a short backgrounder on Dr. Ruth B. Noller and the Likhaan Creatology Team, and introduces creativity in two parallel viewpoints presented as a symbolic equation and metaphoric equation.
Noller’s Symbolic Equation – Dr. Ruth B. Noller [1922-2008], a noted mathematician, computer programmer, and professor of creativity studies, explained that there is a common pattern in the creative processes. She developed a symbolic equation for creativity suggesting that creativity is a function of knowledge (semantics), imagination (divergence), and evaluation (convergence), which are all activated by a creative attitude (Campos, 2000; Isaksen, Dorval & Treffinger, 1998 & 2000).
Noller’s formula for creativity is C = ƒa (K,I,E)
Noller emphasized that “the equation is not so precise as to define how many parts of knowledge, imagination or evaluation need to be present for creativity to exist." Noller explained that creativity is generated by the interactions between Knowledge (K), Imagination (I), and Evaluation (E), but the crucial catalyst in the equation is the small letter "a," which “represents the need for a positive attitude. Without this, personal creativity cannot flourish.” (Campos, 2000; Isaksen, Dorval & Treffinger, 1998 & 2000).
Creatology’s Metaphorical Formula – During the early years of creativity studies (1971-1972) towards the development of “Creatology” as a new “science of creativity,” Rafael Nelson M. Aboganda and Ricardo S. Cortez identified four elements of creativity: creative person, creative process, creative product and creative environment—abbreviated as 3Ps@E. Moving forward, the Aboganda-Cortez’s 3Ps@E was soon transformed into a General Theory of Creatology represented by a metaphorical formula (patterned after Dr. Ruth Noller’s equation): C = ƒa(3Ps@E) which means – Creativity is a function of the creative elements (3Ps) which operate (@) in a given environment (E) acting or working as a synergistic system, activated or made possible by means of small letter “a”. (Aboganda, 1973 & 2015). [n.b.: Noller’s K, I, E is transported and integrated in the crucial component “a” in the revised meaning and interpretation of the Creatology formula.]
