There is a special salt in Korea that is made using sea salt and bamboo. To make bamboo salt, first you cut bamboo stalks and fill them with sea salt, then cover the opening of the bamboo stalk with clay. Second, you file them in an iron kiln and roast them with a pine wood fire. After the bamboo stalks burn away, the salt pillars remain. These salt pillars are then ground into powder and placed into a new stalk of bamboo. You repeat this process 8 times. On the 9th time, the bamboo stalks filled with the 8 times roasted salt are placed in a specially designed iron kiln. They are then heated above 1,500℃ using pine resin to fuel the fire. The salt inside the kiln melts like lava, and is then poured into bowls. When the molten salt cools down, it becomes a hard mass like rock, which is then crushed by a machine, forming granules or powder. Bamboo salt can be consumed by being directly dissolved in saliva or used for seasoning food.
