Wondering which one is better in between Himalayan Salt Vs Table Salt? Is Himalayan Pink Salt good for you?

In this Urdu/Hindi video, we will talk about Himalayan Pink Salt, differences between Himalayan pink salt and ordinary table salt or white salt, and if switching from ordinary table salt to Himalayan pink salt can really improve your health? Is Himalayan salt healthier alternative to ordinary table salt?

This video looks at the key differences between pink Himalayan salt and regular salt and evaluates the evidence to decide which type of salt is healthier.

Salt is the essence of life. Our body needs it, but not too much or too little. Salt is made up of two electrolytes sodium and chloride that help in maintaining the fluid balance in your body. It also helps regulate your blood pressure. According to the current guidelines of World Health Organization, adults should limit their salt intake to less than 5 grams per day.

Pink Himalayan salt is a type of salt that’s naturally pink in color and mined in Jhelum region of Pakistan. It looks very different to ordinary table salt as it has bigger crystals which have a pink colour. Due to its beautiful appearance, it is claimed to be a healthier alternative to ordinary salt and a cure for all sorts of diseases. Many people claim that it’s loaded with minerals and provides incredible health benefits. For these reasons, pink Himalayan salt is often thought to be much healthier than regular table salt.
However, little research on pink Himalayan salt exists, and other people insist that these extravagant health claims are nothing more than speculation.

▶️ Differences of ordinary salt and Himalayan salt:

Chemical analysis of Himalayan salt has shown that it is very similar, and 96% to 99% sodium chloride. The difference is that Himalayan salt has some additional natural minerals which are not present in ordinary table salt, such as calcium, potassium, iron, zinc and magnesium. It is estimated to have 84 additional minerals which are not present in ordinary table salt. It is the presence of these extra minerals that give Himalayan salt its beautiful pink colour, and it is also the reason why Himalayan salt is promoted as being healthier than ordinary salt.

▶️ Are these claims true that extra minerals make Himalayan salt healthier than ordinary salt?

When compared with ordinary table salt, Himalayan pink salt looks prettier and it has some extra minerals in it, but these are present in very tiny quantities. However, it is still mostly made of sodium chloride, and using it as an alternative to ordinary table salt is unlikely to result in any major health benefits. If you are eating a healthy balanced diet then your diet will already contain all the mineral you need without having to spend extra money on Himalayan salt.

For example, one of the extra minerals present in Himalayan salt is potassium. But it is present in such a small quantity, that we would have to consume almost 1.7kg of pink Himalayan salt in a day to get the recommended daily amount of potassium from it, which is not only impossible, but also risky, because Himalayan salt is still mostly made up of sodium chloride.

▶️ Effect of Himalayan salt in health:

Using too much Himalayan pink salt will raise blood pressure, risk of heart attacks and strokes, just like consuming too much of ordinary salt.

▶️ Two things to consider before make the switch from ordinary salt to Himalayan salt:

The size of the crystal of a salt tend to determine its saltiness. If the crystals are small like they are in table salt, they dissolve quickly in the mouth and you can taste the saltiness immediately. Bigger crystals or flakes dissolve more slowly, so are generally less intense in flavour. Pink Himalayan salt has bigger crystals than ordinary salt so there is a chance you will add it to your cooking in greater amounts to achieve the same degree of saltiness, and so there is a chance that your overall intake of sodium chloride would be higher.

Finally, in a lot of countries table salt has iodine added to it during the manufacturing process in order to prevent iodine deficiency which can be the cause of thyroid disease. Himalayan pink salt does not usually have extra iodine added to it, as it is marketed as a natural product.
