On 25 June 1876 along the valley Lakota people call the Greasy Grass, Lakota Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors defeated five companies of the Seventh Cavalry under George Armstrong Custer. Later paintings and films turned that hard fight into Custers Last Stand, a tight circle of bluecoats around a single doomed officer. This documentary returns to the records that Lakota and Northern Cheyenne witnesses left, and to United States reports and archaeology, to set movie myth against the battle as it unfolded on the ground.

We trace the path from the Fort Laramie treaties and the Black Hills gold rush through the Great Sioux War campaign plan, then follow Reno, Benteen and Custer across the ridges above the Little Bighorn River. Along the way we pause with Red Horse ledger drawings, listen to the Reno Court of Inquiry, and examine how mid century films reshaped a Lakota and Northern Cheyenne victory into a story about one man. Finally we follow the aftermath into loss of the Black Hills, reservation policy and modern efforts by Lakota and Northern Cheyenne communities to keep Greasy Grass history alive on their own terms.
