The magnificent Tweed Regional Gallery, situated just 3 kilometres (4 minutes' drive) from the Murwillumbah CBD in the Northern Rivers NSW region, is a major tourist attraction. Its an ideal daytrip destination to visit, 30 minutes' drive from the Gold Coast Airport, or 40 minutes' drive from famous Byron Bay. It’s also a most pleasant venue in which to hang out, with friends, dining in the café, ‘Gallery by Bacaro’, which is attached to the art gallery.
Filming this stunning facility and learning about artists, benefactors and supporters has been an enriching experience for me. Kudos to all who have gifted the aesthetic benefits of this fine gallery to the community.
Stage 1 of the impressive, architectural prize-winning new building received over 50,000 visitors in 2004, its first year of operation.
In 2006, Iconic Australian painter Margaret Olley AC opened Stage 2. Subsequently visitor numbers have risen to around 70,000 per annum. Sadly in July 2011 Margaret passed away.
The Margaret Olley Art Centre which was officially opened in March 2014 contains a meticulous re-creation of rooms from her Paddington home studio. Just outside the windows of this, only a few metres away, her ashes are now interred beneath a plaque in the peaceful, shady Margaret Olley Memorial Garden.
Worthy of mention is the land upon which this great gallery stands was generously gifted from the farm of former Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the National Party, the late Doug Anthony AC CH and his widow Margot.
Ben Quilty's powerful 2011 Archibald Prize winning portrait of Margaret Olley is strategically placed in the Margaret Olley Art Centre, where it attracts your eye like a magnet, as it comes into view. I found it riveting. I was also impressed by the fact that the skill of the artist was abundantly apparent, given that when viewed close up, it's seemingly just blobs of paint applied with impasto technique. However, those 'blobs' are obviously laid down with masterly deftness via Ben Quilty's gifted eye and hand, rendering a wonderful capture of Margaret's countenance.
I highly recommend browsing the Tweed Regional Gallery website where you will find both historical and biographical content plus news of upcoming exhibitions and events. https://gallery.tweed.nsw.gov.au/Home
The Tweed Valley countryside surrounding the gallery is simply idyllic. The morning I was filming here, the light was perfectly sculpting the lush pasture covered rolling hills. The distinctive volcanic mountain, Wollumbin (aboriginal word meaning cloud catcher) aka Mount Warning, looms in the background. I was immediately in awe of such beauty and imagined that I was either in Eden, or Tolkien's mythical Middle Earth. The serene Tweed River meanders below and comprises part of the enchanting view from the gallery's balcony and from the café's deck.
Other art spaces very close-by are:
The M|Arts Precinct, right in Murwillumbah CBD where artists and artisans are making, displaying and selling their work from studios in repurposed, renovated shipping containers.

The Murwillumbah Arts Trail event held annually in May where art exhibitions are distributed throughout the Murwillumbah CBD and are visited by following an 'art trail' map.
