Kalamukha: The Black-Faced Monks

Описание к видео Kalamukha: The Black-Faced Monks

Did you know that some of the earliest monks in India wore black marks on their foreheads? They were known as the Kalamukhas, a sect of Shivaism that existed during the Middle Ages. Their name means 'black face,' symbolizing their connection with time and death. They were descendants of the Pashupatas, one of the oldest sects of Shivaism, which believed that God was both the cause and the effect of the universe, transcendent and immanent. The Kalamukhas dedicated themselves to strict asceticism for 12 years, eventually splitting into two branches: Saktiparisad and Simhaparisad. The former was more orthodox, while the latter was more radical and practiced esoteric rituals.
