STORYLINE
Togliatti is one of Russia's largest so-called 'monocities', cities which depend financially on just one enterprise, which here is the automotive giant AvtoVAZ, providing jobs for the majority of the local population.
These monocities all saw their peak in the Soviet era, but in 1991, after 70 years of Soviet rule, the huge, clanking structure collapsed.
Some factories simply closed their doors. Others were purchased for a pittance by a generation of oligarchs, who milked them for profits rather than investing in them.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is running to reclaim the presidency in Sunday's vote, saved the AvtoVAZ factory in Togliatti from bankruptcy more than two years ago.
