Mr. Bharansar Rai, 69 is a proud kirat who is been living in Melbourne, Australia since last 30 years. His love of Binayo and Murchunga cannot be measured in any digit. Ever since I first met him , he always talks about how he wants preserve this beautiful tradition of Binayo and Murchunga.

Mr. Rai joined British Royal Gurkha Army when he was just 15 years old, he then served the Queen until he retired at the age of 30. Mr. Rai now lives in Melbourne with his family.


Binayo is a traditional Kiranti musical instrument made of piece of bamboo. It is played by plucking its metal wire reed with fore finger being gripped between the teeth. It is basically a wind instruments played by blowing the air without tuning the node with fingers. The Binayo is being played by from the air deposited in the lungs of the player and blown with balance, this instrument is 6 inch long and 1inch in width

Murchunga is a musical instrument . It is made of a flexible metal or bamboo with a reed attached to the frame.
The tongue/reed is placed in the performer's mouth and plucked with the finger to produce a note. The volume of the note can be varied by breathing in and out.
