During a short rest at the dock, a dockworker leans against a railing, watching the gentle movement of the water. Suddenly, a sharp splash breaks the calm. A seal near the dock begins slapping the surface repeatedly with its flipper. The sound echoes between the boats. Instead of swimming away, the seal stays close, turning its head toward the worker again and again.

Something feels wrong.

The dockworker steps closer and looks down into the water. Just beneath the surface, he notices another seal struggling near a mooring line. A thick rope is tightly wrapped around the seal’s flipper, trailing behind it and pulling against every movement. The trapped seal twists and rolls, but the rope refuses to loosen.

The worker quickly kneels and reaches down, gripping the rope carefully to avoid sudden movement. With steady hands, he loosens one loop at a time, keeping the rope from tightening further. The seal remains unusually still, as if understanding the help.

After a tense moment, the final loop slips free.

The seal pauses, then flips its body in a smooth roll, splashing water into the air before swimming straight toward the waiting seal. The two press close together, side by side, before gliding away beneath the dock.

The worker stands quietly as the water settles, knowing the splash was never random.
