Now that the Big Bloated Budget is law, people are asking me about what’s going to happen to their health insurance. Here’s what we know so far: Republican lawmakers have stripped healthcare for MILLIONS of Americans to help afford extending TRILLIONS in tax cuts that will benefit RICHEST AMERICANS. Medicaid spending will be reduced by $1 trillion over the next decade, impacting millions of families, seniors, veterans and people with disabilities. More than 330,000 Illinois residents will lose their Medicaid coverage. While some Medicaid recipients will lose coverage, others will likely pay more for some services -- which could be a barrier to getting treatment.
And many rural hospitals face an existential threat with reduced funding. Here at the Treasurer’s Office, we’re doing our part to HELP people. Our IL ABLE program allows qualifying people with disabilities to save for disability-related expenses, including medical expenses and equipment, without jeopardizing eligibility for federal benefits. It’s what government should do -- enable people to have a healthier future. Not take away life-saving benefits.
