About the Controller DDJ 1000

All-in-one DJ controllers have always seemed to suffer from a sort of uncanny valley syndrome. Despite physically resembling two CDJs and a mixer, they've never really managed to conjure the comfortable feeling of being at the controls of a standard-issue club setup. Considering Pioneer has defined the standard with their CDJ range, and to a lesser extent, the accompanying DJM series of mixers, it's on them to translate that pedigree into a convincing controller. But their previous attempts in the DDJ and XDJ ranges have fallen somewhat short. They tended to cram too many controls into an industrial design aesthetic that skewed too far away from the CDJ / DJM products they're based on. However, by taking more direct cues from their top-of-the-line models, the new DDJ-1000 succeeds—for the most part—in bringing that club feeling into the home at a far more affordable cost.

This being a dedicated rekordbox controller, you won't find any touchscreens or ports on the top-plate to pop in your USB sticks. You'll need to connect a laptop to play your music, but it also works as a standalone mixer should you choose to connect turntables or other media players. The DDJ-1000 makes use of rekordbox's digital DJ software add-on, which is included in the price of admission. The software was a little clunky in its first few iterations but it seems to have hit its stride. It still isn't quite as smooth and solid as Serato's Scratch Live, but for home use, you'll have no complaints.
