Prabuddha Dasgupta says "I didn't think of doing a book on Ladakh it just happened. I went to Ladakh in 1995 and I didn't have any thought of going there or doing photography in Ladakh which could then be collated into a book. I went to Ladakh for a commercial assignment and I had heard about Ladakh from many friends and colleagues who had been visiting Ladakh for years but when I reached there I almost sort of had a revulsion for that place. The first thought that I had after reaching there was that I should immediately book a flight and go back to Delhi because that place is so unfamiliar as the landscape and the climate of that place is inhospitable due to which I came back. Then after few weeks of my return, I had a feeling that there was something missing in my life or I am pushing something away consciously and I should not do that and after giving it a little thought I realised that the thing disturbing me is that my heart wants me to pack my bags and leave for Ladakh immediately. This is how my relationship with Ladakh began, it was more like a love-hate relationship, sometimes revulsion and sometimes attraction because I knew it was very uncomfortable, inhospitable and a very spiritually profound place."

Prabuddha Dasgupta (21 September 1956 – 12 August 2012) was a self-taught photographer who grew up in the cultural chaos of post-colonial India. Although he studied to be a historian, he started his career as a copywriter before turning to photography. Prabuddha pursued a variety of photographic projects, unapologetically straddling the two worlds of commissioned and artistic work. He brought a bold, individualistic sensibility that very quickly placed him in the ranks of major photographic talent in the country. His second book Ladakh (Viking Books), a personal exploration of India's frontier wilderness, was published in 2000. Edge of Faith (Seagull Books), a collection of portraits of the Catholic community in Goa, was published in 2009.

An exploration of India's last wilderness, on the edge of the Tibetan plateau, and final stronghold of the old Tibetan Buddhist way of life. A solitary journey through a tortured and beautiful land, in search of a metaphysical embrace that whispers to us the secrets of our inner landscapes. A visual communion with a fragile yet impressive culture in the throes of change, and a threatened landscape exploding with stark, uncluttered beauty... an enigmatic loneliness on the edge of everyone's world.
