In 2012, at 53 years old, Zuzana Hofmannová decided to enter the Death Zone without supplemental oxygen. She reached the summit of Broad Peak, becoming the first Czech woman to do so. But the triumph lasted only a few minutes. On the descent, fog closed in on the horizon, exhaustion took its toll… and Zuzana disappeared without a trace.

Her body was never found. All that remained was an impeccably white slope and the final accounts of those who saw her disoriented at nearly 8,000 meters. This is the true story of a record that became a death sentence, of a master mountaineer who knew the risks — and how, on Everest and in the Karakoram, the summit is only halfway there.
