In a major milestone for wildlife conservation, Gujarat now boasts 891 Asiatic lions—a 32.19% increase since 2020 and a 70% rise over the past decade. The 16th Asiatic Lion Population Estimation, conducted from May 10–13 across 35,000 sq. km and 11 districts, highlights the success of Project Lion.

The census used the direct beat verification method and involved over 3,800 personnel, including forest officials and locals. The data shows growing lion populations in traditional and satellite areas like Umbrelli and Barda Sanctuary. PM Narendra Modi praised the conservation efforts that are creating safe habitats and expanding lion territories across Gujarat.
