Adoptive parents Josh and Lindsey Redfern give viewers an overview of their lives in open adoption through this video, sharing about their three boys and the various stages each of their open adoption relationships are in and how that works. Through telling the stories of their children's open adoption relationships and how their friendships have progressed over time (from not sharing addresses to having special birth mom/child dates), the Redferns give a very genuine and realistic view of what open adoption truly looks like. The Redferns also give helpful pieces of advice about how they've handled difficult situations and how they've processed unexpected requests with thoughts such as, "Is this weird because it's just different or is there a real reason we shouldn't do this?" Also shared are ways that they've managed to handle difficult situations by not claiming ownership or being authoritative, but simply treating open adoption as a relationship that needs to be nurtured and treating everyone with respect. Key advice includes, "Get rid of the guilt and focus on having a relationship with somebody" and "You need to be forgiving."
