Welcome to tarkov tales and a series that explores the background of the scav bosses; who are they and why are they here? This week, we focus on a deadly woodland hunter, none other than the SVD-weilding Shturman.

The tarkov region used to be a densely forested area before the special economic zone was built. Small dwellings and hamlets littered the forest, with many of the locals relying on hunting and trapping to make ends meet. Little is known about what became of these people after the crisis hit. We can assume that many either fled or died trying to protect their homes.
Of the few that remained, stories emerged of semi automatic sniper fire ringing out from the trees. Comrades would drop dead, shot from seemingly miles away. The area of the old sawmill became renowned for scavenger activity, with porwerful enemies lurking inside. Communications equipment and vehicles with storage crates could be seen among the ramshackle warehouses. The only reports of any sightings were of hodded figures and ghostly faces.
The boss of the Woods sawmill protects the area with deadly precision. His 7.62mm SVD sniper rifle packs a punch even at extreme ranges. He carries a backup AK101 for short range engagements and prefers to retreat to a safe distance to engage targets he's spotted.
The guards that flank him also carry SVDs, but also have a chance to carry SKSs and even the occasional VSS. These guards are also deadly accurate and will waste no time in dispatching the player.
His name is Shturman, which in Russian means Navigator, and coupled with the location of where he spawns, could mean that he and his guards are some kind of forward recon force, sent to the woodland comms outpost to scout the area ahead of a larger force.
His guards are always named Svetloozersky, which according to the wiki means 'lake of light', they also share their name with a settlement in the Yarkovsky district of the Tyumen region of Russia, which could indicate where they're from, similar to Reshala's guards.
On occasion, Shturman will drop a The Svetloozersky gang's common fund stash key. It looks very flimsy, it could break from even a single use. Opening the stash can lead to a wide variety of attachments and valuables. Also very rarely, he will drop the highly sought after Red Rebel Icepick, which sells for millions to other players.
Any other clues to their background are currently beyond our reach. Looking around the area, the level of tech equipment strewn around looks as if a serious operation was in the midst of packing up. Rumours of Terragroup access cards being found in and around the vehicles could also imply that Shturman and his guards were once employed by the shady corporation.
The only in-game description we can find is from Jaeger yet again, and the Huntsman Path Woods Keeper quest, where he tells us:
"For many years working as a gamekeeper, I know that if there is an infection in the forest, then you need to get rid of it immediately before the whole forest gets infected. One such infection settled here, they call it Shturman, he and his crew set up at the sawmill, so now I don't feel safe even in my own reserve. Deal with it, it will be for the better for the forest and the people. But be careful, Shturman has friends, and they all can shoot well."
When we elimiate Shturman and complete the quest, he thanks us: "So you made Shturman finally leave the sawmill. Well, not bad, many people can breathe in peace now. I might even move closer to the city myself, closer to home. Here's the reward, found some strange stashes in the woods, and that's what was in them. I don't need them, but you might find them useful."
He talks of him briefly in the Hunter quest, but he says nothing new about the boss and his friends. All we can assume is that Shturman and his crew have taken the woodland territory for themselves.
The only other inference I can make is from past events, where the bosses decided to meet at the reserve military base. Shturman himself and his guards were there, along with every other boss and their minions. They must share a connection, whether it's for their own ends or if they are being manipulated by someone or something more sinister. As with all of these investigations, only time will tell. Hopefully the links and connections fall into place, and we finally get some intel on these interesting individuals.
What do you think Shturman's background is? Does he do forward recon for thr remnants of Terragroup? Or is he just the best shooter in Tarkov, trying to survive? Let me know in the comments.
Thanks as always for watching!
