On April 6th 2017 we launch our Crowdfunder appeal to raise money for The Lost Treasures of St Sidwell's. Our Crowdfunder ends on May 4th this year, the night 75 years ago when the treasures were lost.

St Sidwell's Community Centre is an independent charity based in Sidwell Street, Exeter and today we’re asking you to help us restore The Lost Treasures of St Sidwell’s.

There’s been a church here since Anglo Saxon times and the current building was built in the 1950’s after the old church, like much of the city, was destroyed during the Blitz of WW2…….. seventy-five years ago this May.

In the weeks that followed the bombing in May 1942, local people managed to rescue a number of objects from the ruins of the Victorian church, including a number of stained glass windows and two statues by world renowned sculptor Harry Hems. They were moved to safety and forgotten about for decades: the stained glass packed away in the bell tower of a neighbouring church, the statues languishing in a neglected corner of our gardens, eroded by the weather and gathering moss.

Among the stained glass was a very beautiful and unique image of Saint Sidwella, the patron saint of Exeter. So far this is the only restoration we have been able to afford.

We need your help to restore these beautiful depictions of Exeter’s patron saint and bring them back to St Sidwell’s for everyone to enjoy again.
