Tucked away in the Tiruvannamalai district lies a forgotten jewel of Tamil Nadu’s heritage — the Mamandur Cave Temples. Created more than 1,500 years ago under the visionary Pallava emperor Mahendravarman I, these rock-cut wonders are among the earliest examples of Pallava art. Carved entirely out of living rock, without bricks or wood, they mark the humble yet powerful beginnings of Tamil Nadu’s rock-cut temple tradition — a tradition that later blossomed into the grand creations of Mamallapuram.

In this video, we explore all four caves — from the elegant pillars and lotus carvings of the first cave, to the tri-shrine marvel of Rudravaliswaram dedicated to Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma, to the unfinished third and fourth caves that still whisper the plans of ancient sculptors. We also uncover inscriptions from the Brahmi era to the Chola kings, the history of the nearby Dusi-Mamandur lake, and the spiritual landmarks surrounding the site, including the great city of Kanchipuram and the Arunachaleswarar temple of Thiruvannamalai.

This is more than a journey into stone — it’s a step back into the days when the Pallava dynasty shaped the future of South Indian art.
