«Optimality in Neo-Gricean Pragmatics: the Challenge for E2L Users»
Grice's original theory of conversational implicature has been developed in two directions, the study of context-sensitive pragmatic meaning, for the most part in the relevance-theoretic paradigm (post-Gricean pragmatics ) and the study of content-independent, optimality-oriented form/meaning pairings (neo-Gricean pragmatics). This talk explores the extent to which neo-Gricean pragmatic interpretations are both unproblematic and problematic for second language users of English.
