The south side of the track once held a cottage, and today in autumn it features Virginia creeper climbing the trees and hedges rich with sloes from Blackthorn, whose timber was used for rake teeth and which may be an ancestor of the plum. Alongside are haws from Hawthorn, valued historically for hedging, tools, and fuel, and believed to have supernatural powers, as well as rose hips from Dog or Field roses, prized for their high vitamin C and culinary uses. Oaks here may or may not produce acorns each year, relying on animals like jays and squirrels to disperse them, with successful regeneration depending on forgotten caches. By late autumn, winter thrushes such as Blackbirds, Fieldfares, and Redwings arrive from northern Europe, with Fieldfares identifiable by grey markings and harsh calls, while Redwings resemble Song thrushes but show red wing patches in flight and a creamy eye stripe.
