The Calcutta High Court on May 22 struck down the OBC status of several classes in West Bengal. The big verdict came while the court heard a PIL that challenged the process of issuing OBC certificates. The court directed that a new OBC list be prepared by the West Bengal Backward Classes Commission. The new list is to be prepared on the basis of West Bengal Backward Classes Commission Act of 1993.

The HC ordered that the canceled certificates cannot be used in any employment process. Additionally, the Court also mentioned that those benefited from these certificates will not be affected. Reacting to the development, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said that she would not accept the order.
