A few days before the 170th anniversary of the Eureka Uprising, I visited the Eureka Museum in Ballarat. It houses the iconic original Eureka flag as well as much historical memorabilia relating to the Uprising.
On December 3 1854 years of protests and dissatisfaction with the Government treatment of miners reached crisis point. The military surrounded the miners stockade and the result was bloodshed. Actual fatality numbers are debated as some may have died later but the figure of somewhere between 27 & 35. Many more were wounded and over 100 were arrested with 13 being taken to Melbourne to stand trial ( although all were later acquitted). Much has been written of the Eureka Uprising and it's significant. The Eureka Musem and gardens are well worth a visit, not far from the centre of Ballarat in the suburb that bears the same name - Eureka. This video features the memorial avenue commemorating those who lost their lives, on both sides, Miners and Soldiers. The bodies of those who died are interred in the Ballarat Old Cemetery on the corner of MacArthur St and Creswick Road
