Another railway in the Welsh town of Porthmadog well worth visiting is the narrow gauge 1 ft 11 1⁄2 in (597 mm) Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (WHHR). Drop in for a drink and a bite to eat in the tearoom before taking a look in the shop where you’ll find an extensive array of books covering the narrow gauge trains of Wales along with many fascinating railways, both in the UK and around the world. Stroll down the platform to join the train made up of both replica and original carriages that once ran on the WHR. The train may be pulled by one of several heritage steam or diesel locomotives. The train runs for about a mile to Pen-y-Mount station just beyond which there is a junction with today’s WHR line to Caernarfon. Passengers can alight here to watch the locomotive run round its train ready for the return trip, stopping at Gelert’s Farm to ride the miniature railway and visit the museum, with its substantial array of rolling stock and artefacts covering the history of the society and the WHR.
The origins of the WHHR started with a small group of railway enthusiasts who formed the Welsh Highland Railway Society in 1961 to preserve and rebuild the original WHR. Construction started on the site in the 1970s following the acquisition of land from British Railways running alongside the Cambrian Coast line at a location known as Beddgelert Sidings. A museum and works has been constructed on the site of Gelert’s Farm, here the line turns though 90 degrees to run parallel with the WHR as far as Pen-y-Mount Junction.
The original WHR has been rebuilt by the Ffestiniog Railway Company, leaving the WHHR to tell the story of the original short lived (1922 to 1936) WHR and look after the surviving locomotive (Russell) and carriages.
