📜 Timeline of Rule:

Spain (1755–1812): Founded as a Spanish colonial settlement.

France (Briefly, 1812): During the chaotic Napoleonic era in Europe.

The Republican Army of the North (1812–1813): A filibustering expedition.

Mexico (1821–1836): After Mexico won independence from Spain.

Republic of Texas (1836–1845): As a Texan frontier town.

United States (1845–1848): After Texas joined the U.S.

Confederate States of America (1861–1865): During the American Civil War.
...and finally, back to the United States of America.

In 1840, Laredo even served as the capital of the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande! After the Mexican-American War in 1848, the city was split, leading to the founding of Nuevo Laredo across the river in Mexico.

Today, the Laredo-Nuevo Laredo metropolitan area forms one of the largest and busiest inland ports in the world, vital for trade between the U.S. and Mexico.
