Is there a CHRISTIAN VOTE? Can there be Christian Elections? Christians and Voting.

St Basil the Great taught that if a Christian is caught in the middle of a conflict, he / she should look at the situation as a personal failure: failure to serve Christ, which prevented him to be a temple of the Holy Spirit, which - in turn - prevented him from converting the fighting parties to mutual love. because of this failure, a Christian should enter the conflict and try to bring peace in this manner - NOT because it is the proper, perfect behaviour of a Christian, but precisely as an act of repentance for the failure to BE a true Christian.

While he acts in the middle of the conflict (and three years after the end of the conflict), the Christian involved in the conflict is excommunicated from the Church, as a further confirmation that this involvement of a Christian in the hatred of the world is a painful failure on his part: the failure to act as the 'Son of Peace' and to bring love into the world.

What does this mean for us, today? In the context of the US elections, it means two things: (1) that all Christians should vote; and (2) that all Christians should relate to their vote as an act of repentance for failing to be what a Christian should be, and for failing to act into the world the way a Christian should act.

So: is there a Christian vote? Christian elections? A Christian party? A Christian president or a Christian country? Absolutely NOT. But we must still repent for our failure, and this repentance means we must still vote. May God enlighten us all.
