Pop singer George Michael left his Los Angeles home on Thursday - his first public appearance since his arrest for alleged lewd activity in a Beverly Hills toilet.

The singer's departure was preceded by that of his friend Kenny Goss, who had no comment to make as he left the house.

Michael's lawyer was among those seen entering the mansion.

Shortly afterwards, the singer's friend Kenny Goss and an unnamed woman left - they had no comment for the throng of photographers and journalists waiting outside.

Then - the moment the media had been waiting for.

Having spent two days in hiding, George Michael finally made a public appearance - leaving his home to drive off to an unknown destination.

The 34-year-old singer was alone in a toilet on Tuesday in Will Rogers Memorial Park when an undercover officer allegedly saw him commit a lewd act and arrested him.

Police would not identify the act and said only that Michael did not proposition the officer.

The park is on Sunset Boulevard across from the Beverly Hills Hotel.

After being handcuffed, taken to the police station and booked for investigation of misdemeanour lewd conduct, Michael was released on 500 dollar bail.

Michael is scheduled for arraignment in a municipal court on May 5.

Tuesday's arrest launched the pop star into the headlines again - after he had dropped out of the spotlight for much of the last few years.

It also added him to a lengthening list of celebrities who have run afoul of the law in southern California.

Vice-officers caught British film star Hugh Grant with a Hollywood prostitute three years ago and comedian Eddie Murphy's west Hollywood drive with a transsexual prostitute was splayed across tabloids last year.

More recently, Christian Slater and Robert Downey Junior went to jail and rocker Tommy Lee is currently marching to the beat of the legal system.
