Join WW1 History – Tommy Atkins Frontline 14-18 as we tell the deeply moving story of Private Frederick William “Fred” Liquorish, 20th Battalion Durham Light Infantry – a humble groom from Uppingham, Rutland, whose life took him from the quiet lanes of England to the mud and horror of the Western Front.

Born in 1882, Fred was a working man — a groom, a husband to Maud, and a father to their young son Ernest. When war came, he enlisted in June 1916, first joining a labour battalion before transferring to the Durham Light Infantry. He fought through the nightmare of Passchendaele, served months in Italy, and returned to France for the final battles of 1918.

In early October 1918, with peace seemingly close, Fred wrote a tender letter home:

“My own dearest wife… I may be home before Xmas again. There are bright clouds shining now and all hope for an early peace.”

Just five days later, on 14 October 1918, he was struck by machine-gun fire and taken to No. 10 Casualty Clearing Station near Poperinghe. Despite medical care and the chaplain’s reassurances to Maud that he was “holding his own,” Fred died the next day, 15 October 1918 — only 27 days before the Armistice.

He now rests at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, grave XXX.D.17, surrounded by thousands who shared his fate — men who died in the final weeks when peace was so close they could almost feel it.
