"This kid who went to school upstate, in the country whatever, who is from the ghetto and he tried to make something of his life and he would leave his old friends behind and when he came back on Spring break or Thanksgiving break, his friends became so envious, jealous of him, they killed him. But in the film, I don’t die of course, so it’s a true story that we had taken from Time or Newsweek Magazine. Me as a black kid, it’s a sad story."

The original version of “Who Is It” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on August 7th, 2023. It was unknown this version existed.
Although fans are familiar with the original version from the “Dangerous” album in 1991, it has been revealed that “Who Is It” (originally stylized as “Who Is It?…”) was originally written and recorded as far back as 1986-1987 during the Forever & Bad sessions, with members of The Rag Tag Band, at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos.
The song's lyrics pertain to despair over being left by someone you love; it’s been noted that there’s a comparison to the lyrics of the song to Michael’s hit single "Billie Jean" from the Thriller album. It’s been said that it was Michael’s idea to lift “Don’t Matter To Me” from the vault, an unfinished track he originally did with Paul Anka in 1980, into the bridge.
Michael already had the song written & composed in his head. As he typically did, he recorded a beatbox demo on a tape recorder before recording it in the studio. Shortly after writing the song, he began working further on this version around 1986-1987 with Joe Kehr, Quincy Jones and session-singer Lenny Jay. Later on, rapper & collaborator R.E.D. was brought in for the extended cut for a short rap verse.
It’s specifically noted that this was done around the same time that the short film for Bad was completed and finished filming, as the dialogue was used throughout the track. It was also planned to be a B-side for the Bad single, with a promotional video that remains unleaked. While the song runs around less than 7 minutes, the full-length version is around 10 minutes long. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album. There’s also rumored to be slightly sped-up versions that were made for vinyl.
While they all liked this version, Michael at the last minute felt that “Who Is It” deserved a better spotlight than to be just a B-side, so he opted to cancel the release. Another reason is due to Paul Anka rejecting the involvement of ‘Don’t Matter to Me’ into the song, since he originally wrote it. It also failed to make the final tracklist for the Forever album. So despite the other parties involved being unhappy with the decision, this version was shelved into the vault.
Michael would later on revisit the song for the ‘Dangerous’ album in 1989-1991, that one being produced alongside Bill Bottrell. That version excluded the beatbox, however he performed it impromptu during a television interview special in February of 1993, filmed at his Neverland Ranch in California. It would later be released as the fifth single for the album, along with two different short films.
