to be successful often when we are

not really expecting to be successful

Perhaps you're a teacher and you prepare a lesson

for a very difficult class

If the lesson works as you hoped it would

you might say

That actually came off.

Or perhaps you're a scientist

conducting important experiments

When it works the way you wanted it to

You say

It came off

to come off is a very humble phrasal verb

We use it when we don't really expect

things to happen the way we want

them to happen

so when we say it

we always say it with an element of disbelief

Ahhh.. I can't believe it actually came off.
