Aryan Khan makes his much-awaited directorial debut with The Ba**ds of Bollywood* on Netflix, bringing together an eclectic cast and a bold new take on the Hindi film industry. Bobby Deol, Manoj Pahwa, Lakshya, Raghav Juyal, Sahher Bambba, and Anya Singh joined Filmfare for an exclusive conversation ahead of the release of the show where they shared their experiences, fun anecdotes, and reflections on working with Shah Rukh Khan's son.
Veteran actor Manoj Pahwa, who plays the eccentric Avtar Singh, revealed that the show is not a satire as many believe but a story about the industry and the way it functions. He was blown away by the script at first narration and felt it had to be done. Pahwa also opened up about his viral boxing ring sequence with rapper Badshah. While he praised Aryan, he also joked that he felt like running away from the shoots at times. However, watching the final product convinced him it was all worth it. Comparing Aryan and SRK, he said Aryan carries the same values and warmth as his father but has chosen a far tougher path as a writer-director.
Bobby Deol, who plays superstar Ajay Talwar, confessed that when Aryan called him for the show, he instantly said yes without even wanting to hear the script. Aryan, however, insisted on a narration, and Bobby was taken in by his conviction. Describing Aryan as a taskmaster who improvised on set, Bobby credited him for getting the best out of every actor. He recalled Aryan making him and Lakshya do multiple retakes until he got what he wanted, which Bobby believes is the mark of a good director. Bobby also reflected on how netizens compared his bond with Aryan to the long-standing friendship between Dharmendra and Shah Rukh Khan, calling it a full-circle moment. He addressed comparisons between Aryan and SRK, saying that Aryan’s work will speak for him and establish his unique identity.
Sahher Bambba, who plays a star kid in the series, admitted that early in her career she wished she had the privilege of industry connections, but over time she realised that everyone, even star kids, has their own struggles. She described herself as happy and grateful to be an outsider who believes strongly in destiny.
Lakshya, who plays Aasman, drew striking similarities between his own journey and that of his character, who is also an outsider whose first film becomes a hit. He revealed that the audition line “Sitaar toh bohot hai but aasman toh ek hai” resonated deeply with him, reminding him of his early days in Mumbai when he first pursued acting. The role also reconnected him with the importance of family, something he felt he had drifted away from due to work.
Raghav Juyal spoke about his evolution from dancing with SRK in reality shows to now working in his son’s directorial. Asked what advice he would give his younger self, he said: “Keep going. What people thought were mistakes turned out to be miracles.” He also reflected on his bond with Lakshya, describing their friendship as unshakable.
The camaraderie between the actors sparked some hilarious moments. When asked if Lakshya and Raghav could be the next two-hero duo in Bollywood, Lakshya joked that no one makes two-hero films anymore. Manoj Pahwa chimed in, saying Aryan should make one and give him an “uncle type role.” Raghav added to the fun, suggesting they pitch Dostana 2 or Student of the Year 3 to Karan Johar.
Anya Singh, who plays a manager in the series, was asked whose real-life manager she would like to be. Without hesitation, she chose Bobby Deol, praising his calm, warm aura and saying she’d love to be around his energy. She laughed about how she had even told him the same thing during lunch on set.
The series also stars Mona Singh, Manish Chaudhary, Rajat Bedi, Gautami Kapoor and features star-studded cameos by Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, SS Rajamouli, Ranveer Singh, Disha Patani, Sara Ali Khan, Ibrahim Ali Khan, Ananya Panday, Suhana Khan, and more. Written and directed by Aryan Khan, with Bilal Siddiqui and Manav Chauhan as co-writers, The Ba**ds of Bollywood releases on Netflix on September 18.
