The term “Mesoamerica” refers to a historical region extending from Mexico through Central America. It also included what's now Costa Rica and Belize.

One of the major civilizations of Mesoamerica was an indigenous population called, the Mixteca. They managed to adapt and survive change for more than five centuries.

Back in 1522 when Spanish conquistadors roamed among the Mixteca, their total population was estimated to be over 1 million.

One of the great unknowns in the region’s history is what led to their culture's collapse?

As Correspondent Lara Rodriguez reports, in recent years new findings have unveiled a new chapter of Mixteca history.
