Nandan Mela, an art fair organized annually by Kala Bhavana on December 1st and 2nd, commemorates the birth anniversary of Nandalal Bose, whose birthday is celebrated on December 3rd. Nandalal Bose, who became the head of Kala Bhavana in 1922, significantly shaped the institute’s vision. He advocated for a holistic approach to art education, connecting fine arts with living traditions and promoting indigenous art forms for a newly independent India. His book Vision and Creation emphasized the importance of an annual art fair to engage the community.

First held in 1973, Nandan Mela was conceived as a fundraiser for the Kala Bhavana Students’ Aid Fund. The event features a variety of activities and stalls managed by departments like Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Art History. Items such as paintings, crafts, calendars, jewelry, and ceramics are sold at affordable prices. Annual art magazines Nandan and Searching Lines are also published during the fair, attracting thousands of visitors from across India and abroad.

A highlight of the 2009 Mela was K.G. Subramanyan’s black-and-white mural, repainted at age 86, which became a festival icon. The celebrations conclude on December 3rd with a candlelight procession to Bose’s house, followed by a picnic.
