NEW OCEAN LINERS

Описание к видео NEW OCEAN LINERS

(16 May 1960) At Walker-on-Tyne, a fine new 27,000 tonner for the Canadian Pacific fleet was ready for her launching, and Mrs John Diefenbaker, the Canadian Premier's wife, did the honours. The "Empress of Canada's" keel was laid at the beginning of last year, and she's expected to sail from Merseyside for Montreal on her maiden voyage next April. Third to bear the name, she'll be the largest liner in the fleet, and will be chiefly engaged in service between Great Britain and Canada. It was on the next day, at St. Nazaire, that the new French giant, a 55,000 tonner, was launched. She's to be the flagship of the French line. President de Gaulle was there, and it was his wife who named the ship "France". It'll be at-least 18 months before she sails on her maiden trans-Atlantic voyage with 2,000 passengers.
