Toronto, 1974. Ernst Zündel, a graphic artist and neo-Nazi publisher, places a book on his desk and admires the cover design. Against black, Adolf Hitler's face stares out beneath bold text: "UFOs: Nazi Secret Weapon?" Below, a silver disc rises from Antarctic ice, glowing with mysterious energy.

Zündel knows exactly what he's created. It's entertainment. It's provocation. It's a ticket to radio and TV shows that would never give him airtime for Holocaust denial. But flying saucers? Flying saucers sell. The book claims Nazi Germany developed anti-gravity disc aircraft called "Haunebu" during WWII, that these craft escaped to a secret Antarctic base, and that UFO sightings are actually Nazi technology preparing for the Fourth Reich's return.
The Samisdat Publishers newsletter advertises an expedition to find the polar entrance to Hollow Earth where Hitler waits with his spacecraft fleet. Cost: $9,999 per seat. The expedition will never happen. Years later, Zündel admits the truth to The Skeptics Society: "I realized North Americans were not interested in being educated. They want to be entertained. The book was for fun."

But by then, the myth had escaped his control. Other authors built on his fiction. The Haunebu II, powered by "Thule Tachyonators." The Vril Society in telepathic contact with aliens from Aldebaran. Technical specifications absurdly precise for craft that never existed. Grainy photographs of "test flights" that closer examination reveals as obvious hoaxes.
The mythology ties together hollow Earth theories, ancient astronauts, esoteric Nazism, and government cover-ups into one grand conspiracy. And it serves a darker purpose: if you can believe Hitler built spaceships, then denying Auschwitz seems reasonable by comparison.
