Borneo From Above Episode 12 - Bau

Bau is a gold mining town located 22-kilometres from the capital city of Kuching. It is part of the Kuching Division and the major sub-ethnic group are the Singai-Jagoi Bidayuhs. Bidayuh, which means ‘People of The Land’, were formerly known as the Land Dayaks and they make up the second largest native ethnic group in Sarawak after the Ibans. The tribes in the Bau region mainly come from the West Kalimantan over 700 years ago and have influence of Indonesian and Malaysian culture. The name ‘Bau’ was either derived from the old name ‘Mau San’ that the Chinese miners gave to the place, or from the fact that the place reeked of odor after the many deaths that the place had witnessed from the conflict.
