This photograph depicts the construction of the Manhattan Bridge in New York City. It was taken on March 23, 1909, approximately eight months before the bridge officially opened to traffic.
The bridge crosses the East River and connects Lower Manhattan with the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) neighborhood of Brooklyn. It was the last of three major suspension bridges built across the lower East River, following the Brooklyn and Williamsburg Bridges.
Construction of the bridge began in 1901 and faced various challenges, including financial difficulties and engineering obstacles, before being completed in 1909. The marine terminal is visible in the foreground of the photo, and the bridge under construction is in the background.
