A powerful gas explosion tore through a high-rise apartment building in the Bronx early Saturday, Jan. 24 triggering a four-alarm fire that engulfed multiple upper floors and sent thick smoke pouring into the night sky.

Firefighters rushed to the scene following reports of a strong gas odor, only to face a blast that ripped through several apartments moments later. More than 200 firefighters battled the flames in freezing conditions as residents fled or leaned from windows calling for help, while authorities shut off utilities and evacuated the entire building amid concerns about structural damage.

At least one person was killed in the fire, with another critically injured and more than a dozen others hurt, according to city officials. Hundreds of residents were displaced, many forced to seek shelter as investigators began probing the cause of the gas leak and explosion.
