EASTOFT: North Lincolnshire Parish #17 of 56

Описание к видео EASTOFT: North Lincolnshire Parish #17 of 56

The River Don used to run directly through the middle of this village, on its route to its confluence with the River Trent near Adlingfleet. It split the village into two – part of it was in Yorkshire whilst part was in Lincolnshire. This is why part of the A161, the main road through the settlement is called “Yorkshireside”

The Don is no longer here, and you might be able to guess where I’m going with this. In 1626, our favourite Dutch engineer re-routed the river northwards. Parts of the original course are marked on modern maps. Before the drainage, the quality of the soil was poorer than soils on the higher areas of the Isle of Axholme.

Now, Washing Hall Lane is interesting. Originally it was called Washing Hole Lane. It was so named thanks to The Washing Hole - a pond with a firm clay bottom about 18 inches deep. It was where the farmers and farm workers took their carthorses after a days work in muddy fields to wash their fetlocks before they returned to the stables.

Between 1903 and 1965, the village was served by a railway station on the Fockerby branch of the Axholme Joint Railway, although passenger services ended in 1933. It owes its existence in part to William Halkon, a man who lived at the Hall in the village. One of the contractors' locomotives used in the building of the line was named Halkon, after the chairman.

This one leaves us with just two to visit on the Isle of Axholme. This is EASTOFT.
