Tonight is the Night of Fate 運命の夜 . 20 years ago tonight Emiya Shirou summons and meets Saber, the Fate-ful meet that would completely change the world of Emiya Shirou.

The prologue is a beautiful and masterfully written piece where Emiya Shirou encounters "a beautiful heart", a human heart that suffers itself yet embodies the contradictions of the way of a human, one that could destroy a person from inside out yet one that supports all that is beautiful in life. Both Cruelty and Kindness.

"Should he take Saber's courtesy as kindness or cruelty? When in battle, the Knight carried both within her....There had been a time when he found that contradiction, that self-destructive strength of the heart that would have eaten away at a mere human being, to be beautiful."

Nevertheless a brilliant Starlight that stood before Emiya Shirou's bare eyes on that beautiful moonlit night, responding to the wish and human instinct "TO LIVE".

" — I ask of you. Are you my Master?"

Stood before him the very ideal he had both admired and yearned for deep within not realizing what he truly seeked. Nay, it wasn't the outward beauty, nothing beautiful about the sounds of steels and sword.

Kinoko Nasu on his "2005/11/17: Behind the Scenes of story" blog confirms this specific prologue was from Archer Emiya's perspective:

　ホロウにおける「決戦」を最後まで見て勘の良い人なら気が付いたと思うのですが、ステイナイトにおけるＯＰのモノローグって士郎じゃなくてあいつのものなのですよ。
　いつか誰かが気が付くかなー、と思ったらスタッフ内でも「あ、そうなんすか」と軽く流されたので、あー、やっぱり分からないよなそんなの、と思い今回釈明の機会をゲットしました
Kinoko Nasu : "If you have watched "Decisive Battle" in "Hollow" to the very conclusion, you may have recognized that the monologue in the prologue of "Stay Night" is not Shirou's, but his (Archer's). I was wondering if someone would catch on to it, but even within the staff, it was simply brushed off as "Oh, that's how it is". So I thought, "Oh, you wouldn't possibly catch on to that," and took this opportunity to explain the scenario."

"Decisive Battle" in Hollow Ataraxia features an intense battle between Saber and Archer where Archer recounts this scene of his life. Gives the monologue "I'll remember this scene vividly even when I've gone to hell" a deeper meaning if one knows about Archer's fate.
