This is a bootup demonstration of my 1986 Toshiba T3100 portable computer. I primarily made this video for my fellow tech nerds who enjoy hearing the sounds of vintage hard drives, but also decided to do a brief external tour of all the ports and whatnot.

As you can see in the video, this particular computer is actually a model T3100/20, which means it originally had a 20MB hard drive. Unfortunately, the drive and controller card it originally came with had both failed, and the only compatible replacements I could find were the 10MB versions. So, this is effectively a base T3100 now, and thus I refer to it as such despite what is printed on the case.

The hard drive in this particular system is a JVC JD-3812MOTO, a 3.5in MFM drive with a single proprietary 26-pin connector. They and their 20MB counterparts were used in a handful of other portable computers from around the same era, and are quite rare to find in working condition. In fact, even this one wasn't perfect, as the read heads would often fail to unlock from their park position on powerup due to a bad magnetic solenoid. I remedied this by physically removing the spring-loaded locking pin on the stepper motor.

One thing I find really curious about this drive is how it performs the seek test BEFORE spinning up the platters. Every other vintage drive I've either used or watched videos of typically spin up before doing the seek test. You would presume that this could damage the surface of the platters, yet after 29 years it doesn't seem to have caused any adverse effect. Another interesting feature about this drive is that it automatically parks the heads after about five seconds of inactivity, which can be heard twice in this video.

If you're wondering, the random loud clicking noises you hear while the drive is seeking is a rotation-limiting clip on the stepper motor striking against detent pins. I know it sounds alarming, but as far as I can determine this seems to be normal for this particular model of drive.

If you're curious, the "RAVEN" screen it shows at bootup was because I used to have a habit of naming my computers, and Raven is what I named this system.
