The Sands of Thar Witnessed a Miracle of Learning
A celebration of faith in education, perseverance beyond age, and the quiet revolution of knowledge
The sands of Thar, though miles away, seemed to breathe pride and reverence in Hyderabad, where a grand and emotionally charged ceremony was organized by Megh Malhar Sahkar Suth to honor the extraordinary educational, academic, and social services of Sain Sukhram Das Sajnani, a revered teacher, tireless social servant, and native of the historic village Helario Pir, Taluka Diplo, District Tharparkar.
At the age of 79, Sain Sukhram Das achieved what many consider improbable: the completion of an LL.B. degree, transforming his personal journey into a living testament that learning knows no age, no boundary, and no final chapter.
Among those who addressed the gathering were Senator Engineer Gianchand Tharani, Veerji Kolhi (Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Sindh), Prof. Dr. Abdul Sattar Shah (Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Sindh), Prof. Dr. Syed Sardar Ali Shah (Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Sindh), Madam Rafia Mallah (Registrar, Private Schools, Karachi), Syed Athar Ali Shah (Regional Director Labour, Karachi), Professor Mashooq Ali (former Regional Director Colleges), Advocate Kabir Bheel, Arbab Zulfiquar (Head Master, GHS Diplo), Advocate Hira Lal Meghwar, Masoom Thari, Professor Jairam Das, Professor Sagar Samejo, and several other renowned educationists, intellectuals, and social activists.
In their eloquent tributes, the speakers painted a vivid portrait of Sain Sukhram Das as a man who dedicated his entire life to education with sincerity, discipline, and moral clarity. Wherever he served, he left behind stronger schools, inspired students, and a culture of learning. He treated every student as his own child and worked relentlessly to secure facilities for educational institutions in his village and surrounding areas. Beyond public service, he also invested deeply in his own family’s education, enabling his sons to pursue higher learning and serve the nation in prominent government positions.
The speakers emphasized that even after retirement, Sain Sukhram Das refused to let his intellectual flame dim. Nineteen years after retiring from service, he returned to the classroom, culminating in the achievement of his law degree, an act that powerfully shattered the myth that education belongs only to the young. Several speakers noted that his longstanding struggle against injustices faced by the poor, particularly in revenue matters, motivated him to study law, so that he could serve his people more effectively. Some even urged him to pursue an LL.M., to which the audience responded with applause and admiration.
In his brief yet deeply moving autobiographical address, Sain Sukhram Das Sajnani shared that he began his professional journey after graduating in 1971. After retirement, when life appeared to slow down, his passion for learning reawakened with renewed force.
He further shared that, according to his research, only three individuals in the subcontinent had previously earned a law degree at such an advanced age, making him the fourth, though he humbly acknowledged that others may exist.
In a deeply moving moment, Sain Sukhram Das paid heartfelt tribute to his late father, Saroopchand, who, despite being formally uneducated, instilled in him an unshakable reverence for learning and imparted timeless lessons of honesty, integrity, compassion, and sacrifice for the poor and the vulnerable. He recalled that his father taught him how to live with dignity and self-respect, values that became the guiding principles of his life.
He passionately appealed to marginalized communities to place education above all else, asserting that even selling land, jewelry, or property to educate children is not a loss, but a profound investment, one that yields manifold returns for families, communities, and generations yet to come.
During the ceremony, guests presented Ajrak and Longi to Sain Sukhram Das as symbols of honour and cultural pride, while Megh Malhar Sahkar Suth conferred upon him a Lifetime Achievement Award. In a significant announcement, Madam Rafia Mallah declared the establishment of a library in the name of Sain Sukhram Das Sajnani, to be set up in his village or another designated location in Thar. Senator Gianchand Tharani graciously announced that he would provide space and building for the library.
Adding further prestige to the occasion, Prof. Dr. Syed Sardar Ali Shah, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Sindh, stated that the University should formally honour Sain Sukhram Das and assured that such a programme would be organized in the future.
