Sikandra Tomb of Akbar The Great King


In ancient times, constructing monuments were a sort of tradition. Monuments were a matter of dignity and pride for the mughal rulers.

As India has witnessed many kings and queens in antiquated times, therefore, visitors find lots of forts and palatial mansions spread all across the country.

Monuments are still consrtucted (latest being Statue of Unity Gujarat which is The World's Tallest Statue) and are a part of our heritage commemorate either an event or a person.


The opulant structure shown here in this video is the Akbar's Tomb which is situated in the suburb of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India and is constructed on the land of Sikandra district. Different religions have different methodologies for performing last rites and the people during the Mughal empire used to bury the remains and build a tomb over it. Such was the purpose of Akbar's Tomb as well.


Akbar's tomb located in close proximity to River Yumuna is built with red and white sandstone, the work for this splendid monument started in the year 1605 and gpt completed in the year 1612.

The scenic beauty of the tomb (also called Bahistabad means heavenly abode ) is mesmerizing. The building is covered with lush green gardens and big trees and the architecture of the building is captivating.

The mausoleum is located ay the centre of sprawling charbaug with lush green gardens , the main entrance to sikandra is located on the southern side which also has 3 false Gateways.

Southern gate of Sikandra is huge , spread over two floors with minarets on both sides , and a 61 feet "I WAN" On both sides which also has double naive on both ends.


Another unique feature of Sikandra Tomb is the interesting square structure located adjacent to the grave of Akbar King which is constructed in five receding levels , what makes this intriguing is the absence of A DOME which generally is the mainstay of all mughal architectures, Sikandra is surrounded by a walled enclosure and covers a distance of 105 metre sq.

The Tomb building is a four-tiered pyramid, surmounted by a marble pavilion containing the false tomb. The true tomb, as in other mausoleums, is situated in the basement. There are three more tombs in the building which were made as the resting place of Akbar's wife and his two daughters (with a belief that even after death the entire family should stay close to each other )


Akbar's Tomb which is a integral part of the agra Tourism is located on NH19. Nominal amount for entry ticket is charged for a stupendous experience at Sikandra and it is advisable to take the services of a english speaking guide from Agra for making the whole experience a lot more immersive, enjoyable and knowledgeable.

The visiting hours of Sikandra tomb are from 6am to 6pm. No food items are allowed inside, but photography is, as it allows one to keep the memories of the visit with them forever.

As these heritage buildings exhibit our rich heritage and culture, it is very important to maintain them as well, thus, the restoration work of the monument is an ongoing process with commendable work being done by Archaeological survey of India.
