Shorebirds of the Atlantic Flyway: How recent work to conserve wetlands is contributing to species and habitat resilience in the Caribbean and beyond - Part I

This one-hour webinar features inspiring talks from our day-long symposium at the recent AOS-BC Conference in San Juan in June 2022. The symposium talks addressed the highs and lows of wetland conservation and how involving communities can help us protect these vital habitats for shorebirds. For the webinar we selected not one but three talks from Caribbean conservationists at the forefront of wetland conservation on their respective islands:

"When conservation interests and coastal development collide – a new cautionary tale from Grenada" Jody Daniel (Gaea Conservation Network- Grenada)

"Improving wetland habitat and raising awareness about shorebird conservation in Antigua and Barbuda" Joshel Wilson (Environment Awareness Group (EAG)- Antigua and Barbuda)

"Helping nature rebound to help people recover: Engaging local communities in mangrove conservation and restoration" Elijah Sands (Bahamas National Trust (BNT)

Caribbean wetlands are important places for both migratory and resident shorebirds to feed and rest. Unfortunately, these habitats are threatened by development, human disturbance, pollution, invasive species, and climate change, with many shorebird populations showing steep declines. Only when we come together and share information about how to tackle these threats can we really begin to protect our wetlands for shorebirds and people.

We know that many people in our community were not able to attend the conference or symposium. This makes it possible everyone to learn from these amazing conservationists!
