These are 23 morning show success strategies I have taught to morning shows and breakfast programmes around the world. In my experience, they work. It will be up to you to determine if they work for you for your program, in your market, for your radio station.

The very first strategy is to Define Your Focus.

By focus, I mean what is the one thing that the morning show will focus on? What is the one thing that the morning show stands for?

Is it being funny? Is it being the morning news source? Is it being the show that all the celebrities visit? Is it being the radio show with the biggest, most outrageous contests?

"Well, yeah. Then all those we want to be all of them."

Your show can't be all of them. You have to focus on just one thing, and before you can do that you must define that focus.

When I work directly with morning shows, I say to them: "Write down in just a few words what your morning show focuses on. Don't conference with each other; don't talk to each other. I want you to do this individually."

If you're the program director and you have two people on your morning show, or three or four or five, if they give you more than one answer then we know we have to start at the very beginning.

Invariably you'll get more than one answer. Someone will say, "We're the friendly morning show."

Another team member will add, "We're also the funny morning show."

Yet another will say, "We're the fun morning show" -- which sounds a lot like friendly and funny, but it's not the same. It's different.

What is the one thing that your show stands for? Once your morning show has answered that question, it makes it really easy for them to make choices at any given break, when your breakfast programme has a choice of two things to do.

We're not talking about program elements. We're talking about when they have a couple of things that they could do based on their own discretion.

If they have a choice of two things and one of them represents that one focus that they stand for and the other does not, guess which one you go for?
