Year 1962. A ten year old young boy is walking hand in hand in to a movie theatre in Bombay city with two elderly gentlemen. It’s a normal scene anywhere. But it becomes really special when the two elderly gentlemen are none other than the iconic Kishore Kumar and the legendary Sachin Dev Burman. Any guesses with regard to the young boy?? Well it's Kishore da's elder son Amit Kumar Ganguly.

This was an unique event featuring one of the present-day legends of the Bollywood playback genre, Amit Kumar, the illustrous son of the great Kishore Kumar & Ruma Guha Thakurta. The event was titled 'Amit Kumar - in conversation with Pt. Tanmoy Bose’. Pt. Bose, a multi-percussionist & table exponent, is a disciple of Pt. Sankar Ghosh and he engaged in conversation with Amit Kumar. Pt. Bose has collaborated with the legendary Pt. Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar & Ustad Amjad Ali Khan apart from several other international stalwarts. He has accompanied legends like Pt. V. G. Jog & Ustad Munawar Ali Khan on the tabla. During the course of the event, live musical acts were highlighted by the presence of eminent musicians like Rocket Mondal, an associate of Amit Kumar for over 25 years. The evening further blossomed when Amit Kumar shared anecdotes with reference to selected visuals. Additionally, noted personalities from Mumbai & Kolkata pitched in with their views.

You are aware that Amit Kumar, a legend in his own right, having recorded more than 2000 songs, is the heir to the legacy of the legend of legends Kishore Kumar. His mother, the founder of Calcutta Youth Choir, Mrs. Ruma Guha Thakurta, has been an acclaimed actor and cultural luminary of Bengal. He was the undisputed king of Bollywood playback for five years after his father's demise starting 1987. His songs in films like Balika Badhu, Love Story, Teri Kasam, Tezaab, Tridev & many more are hummed everyday by millions of Indians even today. Also, he lent his voice for numerous Bengali films under the music direction of stalwarts like R D Burman, Bappi Lahiri & Ajoy Das. His contribution to the genre of modern Bengali songs is paramount. His non-film Bengali albums like ‘Sagarika’, ‘Mayabini’, ‘Kolkatar Gaan’ & ‘Phele Asha Din’ have been hugely popular. He has spent his childhood in the company of legends like S D Burman and has been nurtured by the genius of R D Burman. He has recorded songs for legends like Salil Chowdhury, Madan Mohan, Kalyanji Anandji, laxmikant Pyarelal & Rajesh Roshan.

A man like Amit Kumar is rare today. He is a living treasure trove of untold stories of the times of the golden age of Indian film music. Today he is busy with live shows worldwide and more so with creating his own brand of music. He has come up with a music company of his own, co-owned with his brother Sumeet, Kumar Brothers Music (KBM), which has come up with three fantastic albums already in two years. His vision is to bring back the sound of melody, harmony and true lyrical value.

Overall, its a new beginning for Amit Kumar and he is here to talk about it.
