It’s a “Wonderful Wednesday” when you can relive and experience again “Holidays with Hugh” the Compton Heights Concert Band’s 1999 Powell Hall Holiday show which drew an adoring, enthusiastic, and packed house to Powell to hear our “Tenor of the World”, Hugh Smith.

The show begins with the all-time classic, “Jingle Bell Rock” in a snappy version by Bandmaster/Arranger Johnnie Vinson.

Hugh does great justice to Puccini’s beautiful “La Boheme” aria, “Che Gelida Manina”. He then follows with the tenor favorite “Panis Angelicus” by Cesar Franck, alternating melodic phrases skillfully with Mary Weber, trumpet player.

Then, Hugh tackles “The Christmas Song” with aplomb, capturing the audience’s attention.

The Band breaks out with Jose Feliciano’s foot tapping “Feliz Navidad”. Edward Dolbashian conducts it with great enthusiasm!

Back to his opera repertoire, Hugh emotes with “M’appari Tutt’ Amor” from Friederich von Flotow’s “Martha”.

Mary Weber, trumpet player, returns to perform with Hugh in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s gorgeous “Pie Jesu”, a tenor favorite, in a duet carried out flawlessly by Hugh and Mary.

The Metro Chorus joins Hugh in the powerful “I’ll Walk With God” written by Nicholas Brodszky for the movie “The Student Prince” produced in 1954. It is a special arrangement by Richard Hayman for the St. Louis Symphony and then by the late Jerry Robinson for the Compton Heights Concert Band.
