The Calling of History: Sir Jadunath Sarkar and the Birth of Historical Research in India

Dipesh Chakrabarty is the Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor of History, South Asian Studies, and Law at the University of Chicago. He is a founding member of the editorial collective of Subaltern Studies and a founding editor of Postcolonial Studies. Presently a co-editor of Critical Inquiry, he is also the author of many essays and several books including Provincializing Europe. He is completing a book on Jadunath Sarkar.

B.N. Ganguli Memorial Lectures are instituted in memory of the distinguished economist Professor B.N. Ganguli, former Chair, CSDS Board of Governors. Earlier speakers in the series include Professors Charles Taylor, Rodolfo Stavenhagen, Raimundo Panikkar, Bhikhu Parekh, Ernest Gellner, Ali Mazrui, Roberto Unger, Michael Walzer, John Keane, Amit Bhaduri, Giorgio Agamben, Bina Agarwal, José Casanova, Partha Chatterjee and Boaventura de Sousa Santos.
